Stefan Wackerhagen won the skijor race with a time of 48:14 followed by Claudia Wickert with a time of 50:02.

David Johnson won the sled category with a time of 42:10. Second finisher in this category was Marie Elie with 43:17. Third finisher was Charles Villeneuve with a time of 44:45.

Seth Carey ran the kids race with a time of 15:22. Amil Dupuis-Rossi and Virginia Sarrazin participated in the recreational class over a course of 3 miles.

This race was also the first time we could use our new race bibs sponsored by Yukon Brewing and some racers seemed to be confused by the fact that we actually had a complete bib set with all numbers and rushed to the start ahead of time.

The Northern Tales Aurora Twister

Come out and freeze your butt off! It’s Twister time again!

The next Twister Dog Sled and Skijor Race will be held on January 29^th, 2012 at Susie Rogan & Hans Gatt’s place in the Golden Horn area south of Whitehorse.

The main Twister Race will see a challenging and fun-to-run 10 mile trail. The kids and recrational class features a 2.5 mile race course.

Registration and pre-race meeting is at 10 am. The race start will be around 11 am.

Our race day sponsor Northern Tales Travel Services donated the cash for the purse and we will have merchandise prizes from Yukon Brewing, Aurora Booties, Coast Mountain Sports, Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters  and Yukon Quest.

Directions:

Go south on Alaska highway, past the carcross cutoff (do NOT turn onto the Klondike highway). Continuing on the Alaska highway, it is the third road on the left (after the cutoff), called Gentian Lane (green sign). Travel about 2 km on Gentian Lane, look for trail markers indicating a right turn and these markers will lead you to the property of Hans and Susie!

We, of the Dog Powered Sports Asoociation, took some time to relax over the holidays, but have been busy as ever lately to get more Yukon Brewing Twisters and the River Runner coming your way.

Also, we have a free Long Distance Skijor Workshop this coming Saturday, the 21st at 2pm, Mary Lake Subdivision.  It will be led by Gaetan Pierrard and is aimed at getting those interested in the sport ready for tackling either the 65 mile or 130 mile skijor classes in the River Runner.  One important piece of equipment – the pulka – will be talked about as well as a skate ski technique lesson, and much more!  Please contact Amelie at 335-5416 to register, or email dogpoweredsports@gmail.com.

Winner in the sled class was Tagish sprint musher Dave Johnson with a time of 32:50 followed by Armin Johnson with 40:25. Alexandra Rochat finished 3^rd with a time of 40:31.

Jonathan Lucas was the winner in the skijoring category with a time of 36:58. Darryl Sheepway was 2^nd with 40:09 and Stefan Wackerhagen came in 3^rd place with a time of 41:49.

In the kids category Katharina Wirth started her team on the 2 mile trail and finished with a time of 7:05min. She trains her husky team to participate in the Arctic Winter Games 2012 in Whitehorse.

The all new recreational class attracted 4 skijorer to run up to 2 dogs. This class substitutes the former pet dog class, but allows more dogs per participant and is not limited to some breeds. Any dog can run in this class, and retired sled dogs or puppies are just as welcome.

Another exciting event in DPSAY’s Yukon Brewing Twister Race Series will take place at William Kleedehn’s “Limp-a-long-Kennel” on December 11th, 2011. Registration and pre-race meeting will be held at 10 am at Kleedehn City (South Klondike Highway Km 120). We will update the DPSAY blog within the next few days with more detailed directions to this
location.

The main races will allow 4-8 dogs in the sled category and 1-4 dogs for skijor teams on a 10 mile trail. Sleds and Skijor teams will be timed separately but share the trail.

The new recreational class will be an (almost) anything goes event: competitors can ski, run, sled, kick sled, have dogs pull a toboggan, or whatever just as long as the competitor safely completes the 2.5 mile trail as marked with their dog(s) and has fun. The dog limit for the
Recreational Class will be 1 – 2 Dogs. This class allows any breed of dogs!

The kids race will be held on the same 2.5 mile loop. Kids can run up to 4 dogs on their sled or skijor with 1 dog.

There will be no cash prizes for the Recreational class and in the kids race. Merchandise prizes only!

 The weather was a little harsh with wind and blowing snow, but that didn’t stop people from coming out to the first DPSAY Twister Race of the season; “The Copperhaul Twister” at Icy Waters on the Fish Lake Rd.  There were 15 entrants spread out across three events, we had 6 Sled teams, 7 Skijor teams, and 3 entries in the all new Recreational Class.  The trail was in excellent shape and everyone posted excellent times. 

The 11mile Sled Class was won by Dave Johnson from Tagish, YT who completed the trail in 36min and 30sec, and the 11 mile Skijor Class was won by Stefan Wackerhagen who skied the trail in 46min and 08sec.

For this season the organizers of the DPSAY Twister Race Series have implemented some changes to the race structure by separating the Skijorers from the Sled Teams so that they will no longer be competing against one another and also allowing for the number of dogs for the sled teams to be increased.  These changes appeared to be very well received by the participants of this weekend’s Copperhaul Twister.  Especially the Sled teams who all seemed very pleased to be running larger teams.

The first race in this series: “The Copperhaul Twister” will be held on Sunday November 27 at 10am at Icy Waters Km 4.2 Fish Lake Rd (a familiar location and trail for an all new and exciting race) and it will be sponsored by Alpine Veterinary Clinic. 

The Second big announcement is that The Yukon Brewing Twister Race Series will no longer be a league where competitors will collect points at each event to win a league prize at the end of the season.  The race series will now simply be a series of races similar to the DPSAY Hot Hounds Race Series that is intended to be an experiential training race for dogs and drivers to have fun while exposing their teams to a social atmosphere with other dog teams, passing, racing and competition.  

New for this season is the separation of the skijorers and the Sled teams.  The competitors in both events will still go out together and share the same trail but they will be timed separately so that the Sled teams are only competing with other sled teams and the skijorers will only compete with other skijorers.  This has allowed us to increase the number of dogs for the sled teams to a maximum of 8 dogs.  The Dog limits for the Sled and skijoring classes will be as follows:

Sleds 4 – 8 Dogs

Skijor 1 – 4 Dogs

Also new for this season will be the Recreational Class, formerly known as the Pet Dog Class.  The Recreational Class will be intended for anyone who has any breed of dog(s) and is interested in dog powered sports.  The recreational class will be a anything goes event, so as not to limit competitors to just skiing and sleds: competitors can ski, run, bike, sled, kick sled, have dogs pull a toboggan, or whatever just as long as the competitor completes the trail as marked with their dog(s) and has fun.  The dog limit for the Recreational Class will be 1 – 2 Dogs (and any breed of dog is ok)

There will also be a kid’s race that will use the same trail as the Recreational Class and the dog limit will be 1 – 4 Dogs.

Ok we hope to see everyone out on the 27^th at 10am at Icy Waters (KM 4.2 Fish Lake Rd) for what we hope will be a new and exciting experience for everyone.  The costs for registration will remain the same as the Hot hounds events; $10/event for DPSAY Members and $15/event for non-DPSAY members.  The day will begin with registration starting at 10 am followed be a brief mushers meeting, then we will move up to the Copperhaul trail for the races.  After the races we will head back down to Icy Waters for a Awards presentation with cash prizes from our Race Day Sponsor: Alpine Veterinary Clinic and Merchandise prizes from our other prize sponsors: Icy Waters Arctic Charr, Aurora Booties, Cadence Cycle, and Firstmate Extreme Dog Food.
