River Runner Wrap-up

February 28, 2012 Leave a comment

A couple days since the race finish and hopefully all racers, volunteers, and organizers have caught up on their sleep deficit!

Sunday afternoon, the final dogsled team crossed the finish line, driven by Nathaniel Hamlyn of Yellowknife.  He therefore captured the red lantern award and went on to join others at the finishing banquet.

Mushers reported hard and fast trails for the return trip from Mendenhall to Whitehorse.  Surprisingly, the temperature dropped to minus 30 on the Takhini River, perhaps a shock for some since it has been an unusually warm winter in Whitehorse recently.

Sunday evening everyone enjoyed a delicious spread at the Mt. McIntyre Centre finishing banquet.  Draw prizes were given out and then race prizes were awarded.

Darryl Sheepway took home a lovely framed print for his first place finish in the 65 mile skijor class; Nathaniel received his ‘green’ lantern for the final team on the trail; and the top five sled teams finished in the money in the following order:

1st Normand Casavant

2nd Hans Gatt

3rd Ed Hopkins

4th Martine LeLevier

5th Gerry Willomitzer

For his first place, Normand also took home a framed print.  Hans Gatt was chosen for the Vet’s Choice Award, a gift certificate donated by All Paws Veterinary Clinic.  Finally, Mike Simon received the Volunteer of the Year award, a gift certificate donated by Whitehorse Motors.

All of the times for the event will be posted on our website under the RR100 page.  Definitely some records set this year with finishing times 1 1/2 hours faster than last year!

This race could not happen without the help of volunteers – a big THANK YOU – you know who you are!

And also another big thank you to our sponsors – please see their names on the side bar of the website and give them your business.

Stay tuned for the next Yukon Brewing Twister – tentative date set for March 18th.
